from the artist: what a day yesterday was! he's OUT! my entire being is lighter. i want to thank everyone who voted, campaigned, and worked their asses off for this to be possible--especially POC and especially black women, who really came out for the vote. thank you.
now on to the real work. biden isn't a cure-all. he's not even a band-aid. we have so much work to do. how will you get involved? i plan on volunteering my graphic design services for local elections and organizations dedicated to reaching out to untapped communities!
for the record, the full quote from this crown is ''if our civilization is destroyed, it will not be by barbarians from below. our barbarians come from above.'' it is from henry demarest lloyd, & i think it is so pertinent to what's happening this week. mexican fire opal decorate the text along with blue glass beads. dandelions, symbols of healing since they can endure almost any living condition, also adorn the crown. dandelions have an extremely interesting history. they are useful plants, being both edible and medicinal. but in '50's and '60's, several pesticide companies created marketing campaigns re-branding the plant as a weed. dandelions didn't belong on those perfect green lawns! their reputation as a delicious green and herbal remedy was all but lost.
who decided that the dandelion was bad? did they have a crown? having power is not the same as having values and morals. i can name more bad rulers than good. as we begin to move forward from an inextricably damaging era of our nation, we need to remember power doesn't equate goodness, or kindness. we need to hold those in power by their feet, and their feet to the fire. we put them there. we gave them a crown. if they don't convey the will of the people, we can take that crown away. happy sunday all.
