from the artist: similar themes from 'nature, imitated' carry over to 'momma's other crown.' momma is none other than mother nature. however, this piece for me draws a more personal connection. inspired by my nana (the mother of my mother), the flowers are all little buds i've seen in her garden at one time or another. i've also seen a myriad of butterflies in that garden--maybe not one made of silver & jewels. i love walking with my nana through her garden, where she patiently points out her newest flower bed and tells me the name of her new plants.
crowns and the jewels that are in them are heirlooms. objects that are passed down from generation to generation in royal families. the ladies of england tiara, a tiara owned by queen mary, was remade into the lover's knot tiara for the queen. later, it was passed on to the current queen. princess diana wore it frequently, & kate middleton wears it now. the silver band of the crown i made is an exaggerated shape of this crown. pharaoh crowns have never been found--one reason that may be is because they were passed down from pharaoh to pharaoh. another reason is because they may have been made with delicate materials.
.i'm not a queen, but one of the many points of these crowns is that 'royalty' is a man-made title. it's nothing. anyone can proclaim royalty, so i am: i'm royal, you're royal. as such, i wanted to make a crown with close connections to my family--an heirloom of sorts, from my nana and her garden to me. the butterfly is made of silver & jewels. there is a miniature butterfly on the opposite side of the crown, which also holds hydrangeas, rose buds, paper pearls, & peony flowers. i chose the silver color to reflect the platinum of the lover's knot tiara. not quite the same thing, but it will do.
