from the artist: drawn rubies, diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires, citrine, and amethyst spread varied across 'scattered words,' a follow-up to 'the language of light.' the idea is, of course, that the light has refracted. we are left with with a tiara that is decorated with gems of all colors. the shape of the crown is a reference to a kokoshnik tiara from russia, which was especially popular among western europe crown makers in the 19th and 20th c.
one thing that cracks me up is the 'pet names' the english give to their crowns. while most crowns are formally named after the various gemstones they are made to carry, a few have acquired nicknames. my favorite of these is 'granny's crown,' a nickname for 'the girls of great britain and ireland' tiara because, well, it's her favorite crown. it too is a kokoshnik tiara.
this brings me back to the mundane vs. luxurious dichotomy. i love the idea that plain occurrences occur in opulent settings, and vice-versa. with these crowns, i wanted to highlight the fact that splendid things exist naturally in what many deem 'boring' settings. when you are busy doing the dishes, or vacuuming, or filling out boring paperwork, you are no less magnificent than a queen at a ball. i'd love to see these crowns worn around the house as little reminders of that.
