from the artist: ‘the language of light’ is, in all senses of the words, a labor of love. a few weeks ago was coming out day--a day to celebrate the lgbt+ community and their love. i've never felt the need to make a formal statement about my sexuality. but an exciting possibility stands that, for me personally, i can love and be in love with anyone, no matter their gender.
crowns are often made in service of capturing a moment. sure, they denote a status--but crowning a king or queen is an entire affair--one whose physical essence is captured in the crown. st. edwards' crown is the only crown used to coronate england's current royal, since 1661. the great crown of victory from thailand has the same distinction--one of holding a precise amount of time.
‘the language of light’ is also heavily influenced by gustav klimt's paintings. google him. you'll see it.
perhaps the last important influence on this crown are halos from saints of medieval depiction, particularly the all-accepting and gentle mary. bri and i collaborated to create an image reminiscent of acceptance and this picture is my favorite of the three (see @ohnoheatherjo for referenced picture).
.
this is a copper crown with hand-drawn gemstones arranged in a rainbow arc. i nearly added clouds! the back of this crown is painted gold.
i want the wearer of this crown to be proud. i am. i made this crown into a moment for myself. as a coronation for coming into who i am. and i made it for all of those folks who are also proud of who they are, who they are becoming. who they want to be but can't. hopefully, one day, we won't have to celebrate love outside of a certain narrative. hopefully, one day, we can just love.
